Andrea here, and very happy that here where I live, I’m beginning to see signs of Spring finally starting to push aside the chill of Winter. Leaves are budding and flowers are starting to unfurl, adding tantalizing touches of color to the muted shades of the landscape. The air is warming, allowing hats, scarves and parkas to be hung in the storage . . .
February and March always feel endless here, and I am SO looking forward to spending more time outdoors—in shorts and T-shirts!—as the days grow delightfully longer. After all the isolation of the past year, the coming warm weather feels even sweeter as we (carefully) begin to tiptoe back to some semblance of normal activities.
So, in celebration of all fun seasonal activities ahead, I thought I’d compose a list—admittedly a silly one—of all the things I love about getting outside in warm weather . . . with a Regency twist!
And so is walking in a public park, even if it’s crowded with others feeling the same way I do about getting fresh air and sun. One can always stop for refreshments at the colorful pavilions catering to hungry and thirsty strollers. (Champagne and strawberries, anyone?) Or maybe bring along a picnic and spread it out on the grass . . .People watching in the park is another fun activity. One can ooh and ahh over the latest cutting edge fashions . . . or laugh at the more eccentric looks. These days, things certainly are eclectic. (Though I think it’s time we all make an attempt to wear “normal clothes” again, rather than sweatpants and fuzzy bear tops.)
The beach is also a favorite spot for me. I love the sound of the ocean, and the sight of seabirds floating in the breeze. Walking on the sand, watching the ships sail by is a treat . . . Even better when a friend invites me boating! And maybe a swim . . . though I'm usually content to just stick my toes in the water.
Physical activity is another joy when the weather warms. Long walks enjoying the details of nature. Birdwatching, following the flights of the birds and the butterflies. (I’m very excited that a bald eagle has recently taking up residence in the harbor near me. It’s been a thrill to spot it soaring high in the sky.)
Then there are active sports—tennis, golf . . . hmm, maybe cricket? That’s a sport I’ve never tried, but spectating is a nice way to spend an afternoon, too. I’m delighted that baseball is back and look forward to catching a game at Yankee Stadium. (It’s the only time I eat hot dogs—and I’m always amazed at how wonderful they taste. It must be the bleacher seats!)Okay, I don’t currently own a horse or country estate, but I did taking riding lessons as a kid and loved the freedom of a good gallop on the fields around the stables. On a balmy spring day, it’s a lovely way to fritter away the hours. (Riding apparel always looks so elegant. But like any skill, appearing comfortable in the saddle takes a lot of practice.)
And lastly, I can't wait to pack my bags and travel again to far-off places and adventures!
Okay, so that’s my list of fun things to do when the weather warms up. What about you? What outdoor activities do you most look forward to when winter gives way to spring?
