Jo here, heralding the year 2013. It doesn't seem a blink since we turned to a new milennium, wondering if all our technogy would implode.
2012 was another the year the world might end, but we seem to have dodged that missile, asteroid, or whatever it was supposed to be. Here in Britain it might have been the great flood. It is now officially the wettest year on record. And still it rains! Has the weather in 2012 been record breaking where you are?
I haven't heard anyone predicting that 2013 will be unlucky, so maybe we have a good stretch ahead.
I have to confess that New Year's Day doesn't feel important to me. I much prefer the winter solstice as the great turning of the wheel and I wish that was our celebration time with fireworks and aspirations for the next cycle. Here's a picture of a recent sunrise to suit the mood.
But here we are, and it's the traditional point, so... In another forum we've been choosing words for 2013. Word we hope will fit it when we look back from the brink of 2014. Want to play? I think it's best not to think too much, but go with what pops into your head.
What popped into mine was SPARKLE. I hope 2013 will be full of sparkly fun and surprises, with plenty of laughter along the way.
Whatever word you choose, I hope 2013 rises to the occasion!
Happy New Year!
Jo

Thank you to the Wenches for all the great reading pleasure you've provided me, this year and previous years. I will be doing some traveling in 2013, so my word is ADVENTURE.

Adventure is a great word, Karin. Bon voyage"
So glad you enjoyed M&M, Jo. And yes, the drought prediction followed by flood was pretty weird.

Sparkle is the name of my white car. Poor baby needs to go to a spa, all the wind has covered her in a crust of sea spray and dirt. I agree with Jo that Jan 1 is just the day you hang up the new calendar and the solstice should be fireworks night. There's a tradition that what you do on New Year's Day sets the tone for the year ahead, so don't pay bills. I'll probably do laundry, but it's better than the New Year's that involved paramedics and the ER for a loved one. Here's to no hangovers!

Dear Jo,
Thank you for the word "Sparkle" for the "2013 New Year. Makes me imagine "Sparkle" as in shining new developments, new ideas, new works for the coming year. Gives me hope of new insights.

I like sparkle, Jo. The word that popped into my mind was opportunity.

I thought of the word cynicism. I would like 2013 to be a year that doesn't encourage me or the population in general to be so cynical about everything, from our political leaders to fads & fashions of the day. Everyone's motives (or their intelligence) seems suspect. I'd like something or someone worth believing in again.

It's fantastic that you are getting ideas from this article as well as from our argument made at this place.

I love the idea of a word for the year! I think mine is "now." As in, don't worry about the past or the future, just the now.
