Julie Cohen - Honorary Word Wench!

Regency open sided bookcaseAs Word Wench readers will know, it is our custom to give virtual gifts to our guests as a thank you for visiting the Wenches. Today I would like to thank Julie Cohen for joining us here on the blog a couple of weeks ago and confer upon her the title of Honorary Word Wench with all its ancient rights and privileges. On behalf of all the Wenches I would also like to give Julie a virtual gift of this beautiful Regency bookcase, originally from Ashdown House, in which to keep all her treasured Regency romances and her own wonderful books. Hopefully it will also remind her of the fun to be had as a re-enactor in a stately home!

This particular bookcase was brought back to England by a gentleman who found it in Florence during his Grand Tour at the beginning of the 19th century. It is made of laburnum and inlaid with beautiful images of birds and flowers in semi-precious stones. Julie, we hope that you enjoy your virtual gift. Wow! I am honoured! And thank you for the bookcase. It is gorgeous.

I might have to double-shelve to get all my Regency romances in there, though...

The Return of The Rake by Mary Jo A frequent interview question for authors is to name our favorite among the books we’ve written. I hate that question. Sophy’s Choice! I usually reply that I love all my books and characters, or I couldn’t write about them. This is entirely true. But if pressed, I will admit that the book that is closest to my heart is The Rake. It’s a long book that was written in a mere four months (very fast for me), and which was created out of the visceral experience of alcoholism. Not my own—I come from generations of Yankee teetotalers....

Georgian reading The Marquess of Rothgar was, of course, very interested in science and engineering, and so he would be reading the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, which was first published in 1665. The word "philosophical" might mislead. It referred to "natural philosophy" which is what we now would call science.
