I abhor my current bed with a passion! Our frame is nice enough. Fairly plain but sturdy enough you could drive a truck over it. Our extravagant, pillow top, firm core, 25 year warranty mattress (which we've only owned for 9!)on the other hand, has two divots at least 3 inches deep where we sleep and the lovely 25 year warranty which stated the mattress would be replaced only means they'll give us a base model and we have to pay the shipping which costs as much as the mattress we have now. O_o

We slept on a glorious mattress at the Hyatt in downtown Buffalo when we drove back to MI from NH on business and in the midst of Hurricane Sandy. I wanted to try and shove the thing in the truck we had but we didn't think we could hide it well on the elevator. I did do some research when we got home. Lovely mattress. Price of a new car!

So, I'm stuck with what we have for the time being.

Mary Jo Putney

ROFL, Anne! I knew in general about the Celestial Bed, but none of the delicious details, such as movement releasing exotic scents. Hard to tell whether sleeping there would get a guy all fired up or give him serious performance anxiety. *G*

I also love a good bed, by which I mean sumptuously soft but with firmness underneath so it doesn't just sag. I hated when the conventional wisdom was that harder beds were better, which is straight out of the Puritan "suffering is good for you" school of life. *G*

I would love to find a really comfortable bed! Dare I ask: what is the name of yours? I had a really good hotel experience too, but I thought it was mainly because of the quality of the linen (it was in Cairo). I nearly bought some of their sheets, but the shipping costs were prohibitive.

Anne Gracie

Theo, how annoying is that! I'm sorry to hear about it. Could you not get your replacement mattress from a store near you? It seems so unfair that you have to pay shipping.
Shame about the lift at the Hyatt -- they just don't make them big enough. LOL

Mary Jo, yes, those hard beds — I can cope with them, and had one for the retreat, but oh, it was so nice to get back to my bed.
The celestial bed is such fun, isn't it? I wish it had been preserved.

Anne Gracie

HJ, it's an Australian brand, I think, so probably not available in the UK. The original fabulous bed I slept on was at the Langham.

Great post, Anne. As others have said I had heard of the Celestial Bed, but hadn't heard all of the details. Love it!! I could go for a bed like that. The size alone would insure I don't wake up clinging to one fourth of my double bed while the dogs and cats are sprawled out on the rest of it!

I sleep on a double bed futon. The original mattress was not particularly comfortable, but I bought a 4 inch thick pillow top mattress pad and it was worth every penny I paid. I added it to the original mattress and it is heavenly.

Now I must admit the beds in the Marriott in New York at conference a few years ago were amazing. My roomie and I plotted multiple ways to get them into our luggage.

Cara Elliott/Andrea Penrose

Oh, Anne, what a fun post. I love eccentricity too, and Graham sounds like quite a fellow (and surprisingly modern—I can see him fitting right in to the '60s, cant' you? The High Priest of the temple of Love!)

The Heavenly bed (oh, fie, I can't even remember the hotel chain—Hilton, maybe?)is very comfortable for a hotel bed. I have a nice Sealy mattress that is very good. I prefer firm, not squishy support, and this one is just right.

Lesley

There was a 1995 novel by Jacqui Lofthouse called _The Temple of Hymen_ which featured Dr Graham's temple. I remember struggling through the first half of it, then ultimately finding it rewarding.

Trevann Rogers

Love my bed. And there's nothing like sleeping on a different one for a few nights to make me love it more!
