I am grateful that there are amazing authors out there writing books that I want to read

And also for family and health and a healthy family and for Skype. Because even if I can't actually see them in person this year, I can still see everyone over the Internet.

Mary Jo Putney

Margot--

Skype is indeed a special blessing at the holiday season. Not as good as a real world hug, but much better than nothing! Have a lovely holiday.

Lyn S

We have a small leatherbound book that each Thanksgiving for the last 20 years everyone at the table gets to write (or dictate if they are preschoolers) what they are thankful for. Family is a given, so that people often must think a bit more. It is wonderful to look back over earlier entries. I now regret that it is on on Thanksgiving that we make the special effort. had everyone in her business write one thank you note everyday. Her philosophy was that if you couldn't think of someone to thank, you weren't paying attention.

Laura

Wonderful post. My thanks to Mary Jo and all of you. Sherrie, I'm sorry I didn't follow these posts well enough to know about your diagnosis last year. I'm thankful the surgery turned out so wonderfully.
A thankfulness journal sounds like a lovely idea.
And, Mary Jo, love the clip!

Mary Jo Putney

Lyn S, what a lovely custom to have your own family Thanksgiving gratitude journal! I'm sure there will be others who will want to institute this in their families.

Give your family hugs for me!

Mary Jo Putney

Laura--

Isn't that clip wonderful? We've all enjoyed watching it more than once, but it was Anne Gracie who realize it was a perfect fit for the holiday. (Even though Australians don't do Thanksgiving!)

Karenmc

Sherrie, I had the same cancer with the same result two years ago. I'm very thankful that my doctors wanted to do the surgery sooner (three days before Christmas) rather than later.

This year I'm especially thankful for the little ones in our family, a three-year-old delight and her one-year-old brother and sister. I'm also thankful for Norman, the new pup I adopted last week, after losing a beloved older dog to cancer. Lots of doggie kisses going on at my house.

Susan/DC

I'm thankful for doctors who can cure Sherrie's cancer and fix my son's heart. I'm thankful that I live in a place where women are celebrated for their minds as well as their romantic hearts. I'm thankful for family and friends to share both good times and bad, as they make the former even better and help us to survive the latter. And I'm thankful that there is at least one day a year when I am reminded of all of these blessings. Much of the year I'm inclined to be grumpy and really should list whining on my resume as a skillset. I've learned that I just can't be cranky when the house smells of turkey and cinnamon.

Barbara Elness

I'm grateful for a great family, a wonderful job, enough money to do some fun things occasionally, lots of books and the ability to read them, and good health. Oh, and that I have a whole pumpkin pie to myself for Thanksgiving. :D

Sherrie Holmes

Sherrie, here.
Laura, thank you for the good wishes. I had a wonderful cancer doc, and she told me that my positive attitude had much to do with how quickly I healed. Like you, I'm thankful the surgery went so well.

Karenmc, thank you for sharing that you also had the same cancer. I've found an entire community of supporters and well-wishers through this experience. I am so glad your own surgery was as successful as mine, and hope you benefitted from your own community of support. God bless.

SusanDC, amen to that! Isn't it wonderful to know that the miracles of modern medicine can even mend a faulty heart! You do, indeed, have much to be thankful for. And I so agree with you that it's hard to be cranky when Thanksgiving smells permeate the house! In fact, I often sprinkle cloves, cinnamon, and ginger into a saucepan full of water, then simmmer it on the stove. I do this every winter, because I love the homey smell.

Blessings to all the Wenches and loyal blog readers. You have all enriched my life in countless ways. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone, even those of you who live in countries that don't celebrate Thanksgiving. It never hurts to pause and take stock of your blessings!

After years of serious medical problems, my husband seems to be healthy, the kids and grandkids are doing well--we are blessed!

Marie

I am most grateful for my loving, noisy family who sticks together no matter what. I am also grateful for books in all their glorious forms. Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Reading all.

Mary Jo Putney

Karenmc--I'm glad you're another survivor os a scary disease. I'm glat you have so muchto be thankful for. Kiss the puppy for me! My cats are all adopted--there are so many great critters needing homes, and you've given Norman much to be thankful for.

Mary Jo Putney

>>Much of the year I'm inclined to be grumpy and really should list whining on my resume as a skillset.<<

LOL! But you do have much to be grateful for, and you express is most eloquently. I think we all need a day where we are conscious of the good things in our lives. The surgeon who fixed your son's heart is worthy of a whole category of his own

Mary Jo Putney

**After years of serious medical problems, my husband seems to be healthy, the kids and grandkids are doing well--we are blessed! **

How wonderful that your husband has regained his health. You sound set for a wonderful three generation holiday celebration!

Mary Jo Putney

Barbara--I'd say having that whole pumpkin pie to yourself is worth a holiday all in itself. *g*

Susan

What a great blog, and I'm loving the responses too -- each thought a new reminder that simply appreciating what's good in life, and knowing what others feel thankful for, can make us all feel good.

This morning there are lovely lingering smells of coffee, bacon and cinnamon from breakfast, the turkey is prepped and ready and I've got to sautee some celery and onion, but I'm taking some time to read these blogs. Truly feel-good. Thank you all for posting your gratitudes in life, and for being such an important part of the Wenches blog-family.

And I'm thankful to the Plymouth Pilgrims for thinking of it in the first place, and Lincoln and later FDR for making sure it remained a regular American practice!

May each of you have a very happy Thanksgiving.

Susan, sending a little apology and thanks to the turkeys . . .

Mary Jo Putney

Susan, you paint a lovely scent-picture of the holiday! I hope everyone has a rewarding day with family and friends, with time for relaxation as well as laughter and eating.

Ella Quinn

Lovely post. I'm happy to have my family with me, though I could have done without cooking.

Mary Jo Putney

Ella--

I favor the potluck dinner, wherein each guest brings something (Actually, the dinner at my house is contributory, but we do work out what people will bring by category.) Much less work. So maybe next year you can assign dishes to the family members. *g*

LilMissMolly

I'm thankful for my good job and loving husband.

Artemisia

I suppose I should be thankful I still have my Aged Parent with me even tho she spends most of her time in bed. I am thankful I have learned how to scream without making a sound.
