Margot

I don't really have a preference for whether a series is hero or heroine-centered. (And a lot of series are family based or just vaguely connected from one to the next, too.) For individual books, though, I usually prefer them to be more hero-centric. I just want to have a hero I can fall in love with.

And I'm looking forward to reading this!

Patricia Rice

Thank you for creating a hero who doesn't seek revenge for past injustices! The guy who moves on and has his own story is much more interesting. Can't wait to dig into this one...

Cara Elliott/Andrea Penrose

Thanks, Margot. I think we all want a hero we can fall in love with, (and not just in books!))

Maureen

I like series when there is a close but complicated bond between either the heroes or heroines. It can be siblings or a group that acts like they are siblings.

Betty Hamilton

I actually enjoy BOTH. A very good example of that is Grace Burrowes series about the Windhams. She began with the older brothers and then included the sister's stories. I love the serioes and Grace's writing style AND of course her heros and heroines.

Minna

I like both, as well.

Cara Elliott/Andrea Penrose

Maureen, I agree—whether the bond is blood or friendship, deep and complex relationships are, for me, what make stories compelling

Cara Elliott/Andrea Penrose

Betty, I really like Grace Burrowes' style too, and her heroes and heroines.

CateS

I like both equally.

Ella Quinn

I enjoy a series. Cara, I can't wait for your next book to come out. Great interview ladies.

Jo Banks

I enjoy a series where the characters can develop as long as they don't suddenly change in any basic way.I think I do prefer the story from the heroes side but he has to be to die for and have faults you can love him for if you see what I mean!!

Cara Elliott/Andrea Penrose

Jo, it's very true that certain flaws make a hero that much more lovable. For a writer, it's such a great challenge to create just the right vulnerability.

Cathy P

I love hero or heroine-centered stories. I loved the series of books about the Hellions of Hallstead Hall by Sabrina Jeffries.

Barbara Elness

I like both heroes and heroines, but lean more towards a heroine centered story because I can identify more with a woman. One of my favorite series is Eloisa James' Desperate Duchesses series.

Mary Jo Putney

Oooh, this looks delicious! Even the teddy bear looks enthralled! I incline to the hero centered premise, though the stories themselves are usually equally divided between hero and heroine.

And if my power was knocked out by a hurricane, I GUARANTEE I would have delivered my book late!!!!

LouisaCornell

I like both! I love a hero-centered series in which the heroes are bound together by blood or a shared past. I love a good brotherhood story and I love to see each man fall to the perfect heroine.

I love a heroine-centered series whether it be sisters or sisters of the heart because you get a unique view of a love story through the eyes of the heroine's sisters.

I've enjoyed Lisa Kleypas Wallflower series. I loved Madeline Hunter's last series about the ladies who banded together in the flower nursery business. I love Mary Balogh's Bedwyns and Stephanie Laurens Bastion club too.

And I am SO looking forward to your latest, Cara !! I have really enjoyed this series!!

Cara Elliott/Andrea Penrose

Barbara, I'm a huge fan of Eloisa's Duchesses too!

Cara Elliott/Andrea Penrose

Mary Jo, of course Teddy looks enthralled. He knows who feeds him chocolate chip cookies and cocoa to go along with the reading material,

Cara Elliott/Andrea Penrose

Thanks so much, Louisa! I really appreciate that. I'm a big fan of the Wallflower series too. Like you, I find both hero and heroine centered series compelling. It's all about how the author builds the friendships and sets up each individual for falling in love.

Cara Elliott/Andrea Penrose

Sabrina Jeffries is a great pick, cathy!

Grin Laz

i like both .. lisa kleypas wallflowers series

LilMissMolly

I like a family or group of friends series, where the others pop up in each book. I loved how Lisa Kleypas did this with the Hathaways, and Kieran Kramer did it with the Impossible Bachelors. Catherine Coulter also had a great series with the Sherbrooke family.

Gail Mallin

Great interview, Cara. I'm very impressed by the thought of you typing by lamplight just to keep us all happy! Interesting question too. Like other people who have posted, I like both types of book and don't really mind who is leading the story so long as both the hero and heroine are strong characters. Books which reveal the family and friendship backgrounds behind the story are very enjoyable for me because I like knowing what makes characters tick and if a hero is behaving badly I get a fresh angle on him from seeing him trough a sympathetic pair of eyes. One of my favourite series is Jo Beverley's Malloren books, which give a really convincing picture of a powerful family with all its trials and triumphs as well as some fabulous individuals all with their own stories.

Marie

I don't have a hero/heroine preference but I like series that deal with a family or group of friends. Two of my favorites are Eloisa James Duchess Series (I see a few agree with me on that) and her Essex sister series. Jillian Hunter had two series based on the Bocastle family that kept me interested until the end.

Cara Elliott/Andrea Penrose

Thanks, Gail. I, too, love seeing hoe family and friendships shape a hero and heroine. It's more real that way.

And yes, aren't the Mallorens a wonderfully interesting family!

Cara Elliott/Andrea Penrose

Thanks, everyone—we're getting some great series recommendations for all our readers!

Linda

Both. I like to know what both of them are thinking & feeling. Having secondary characters, pets, children as part of the story can make it more real & have added depth though it really all depends on how the author has written the story. Love Lisa Kleypas' Hathaway series.
