Fascinating post! I've found the same thing when I look at my early books. The writing may not be as as strong, but the energy and excitement of discovering I could tell stories really shines through.

Also like you, I find certain kinds of characters have consistently appealed to me. (Tortured heroes *g*)

But creativity can't be static, or it goes stale. As a reader, I'm sad if a favorite writer evolves in a direction I don't enjoy, though I understand why she must grow. I think we often keep coming back to the same themes again, but in different ways, as when your mother moved from painting to photography

The Muse moves on...

Cara Elliott/Andrea Penrose

So true, Mary Jo. I find it fascinating how a few core ideas can resonate in our creative consciousness, and then we keep coming back to them in different stages of our development, each time seeing them, using them in different ways. When I go to a retrospective art show (am thinking of an amazing Turner show at the Met) it becomes even more apparent because of the visual medium. How Turner played with representing water over his life is just wonderful to see. he was constantly experimenting, and you cam see the joy in finding a new way that pleased him.

So yes, I believe that evolution is what keeps the creative juices flowing.

Mary Jo Putney

The downside of creative evolution, though, is that we're so seldom satisfied! There are always new rivers to swim and mountains to climb.

But it beats a day job. *g*

Cara Elliott/Andrea Penrose

Yes, that urge to "do it better" next time maybe affects the ability to sit back and enjoy the present. But still, I like that drive to keeping moving, keep exploring. I think if I sat still too long I'd ossify
