Love these photos! When I visited England six years ago, I dragged my husband into many cathedrals. There is something about the Gothic style architecture that intrigues me.

We also visited the National Cathedral in Washington DC a few years ago while attending RWA. Although it's not as old as some of the ones above, it was still amazing.

Tracey--

I agree--the Gothic cathedral style is mesmerizing. One can only imagine the effect of a peasant who had never before seen such majesty and magnificence!

You're also right that using that style in DC's National Cathedral was a wise choice. I love modern Coventry Cathedral, but those Gothic architects really rocked. *g* I believe St. John the Divine in NYC is another impressive Gothic styled cathedral, though I've never visited there.

I would love to sit and absorb the history of these places. Thanks for the pictures!

Sorry not many around here. There are a few old churches in a town near where I live, they are beautiful. Also since some of the civil war was faught around here there is a lot of big old houses near here.

Mary Jo Putney

Kate, these ancient cathedrals are wonderful places to feel the past. Even the small English parish churches have that quality--and they're more likely to be quiet than a cathedral. Not to be missed if you have the chance to visit England!

Quilt Lady, I'm sorry you haven't many old churches in your part of the world. Great old houses are also wonderful, but the vibe is different from the places of worship. Both sorts of building are fun for us history buffs. *g*

I've loved wandering around church's & cathedrals when I've been to England. The architecture is incredible, the plaques & carvings inside are just the tip of the stories of all the people that have been there in the years. I'm holding on to this post just in case I get to travel back again.

Glad you enjoyed the photos and the article. It was tough picking out one for each cathedral. Everywhere you look inside and out, there is something amazing. They are truly works of art.

I love the National Cathedral in Washington, too, and I'm so glad to see it is getting attention after the quake. I remember standing in the center of the floor when the docent pointed out where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had spoken. I got a shiver just to be standing close to such a historical spot...just as I do when I roam through English cathedrals.

Thanks to the Word Wenches for letting me share!

Diane--

Church and cathedrals are even better when they come with stories, aren't they? I love Jo Ann's choices and stories.

Jo Ann--

I was so pleased that you agreed to post your article here. It makes me want to get on a plane and do an English cathedral tour NOW, which is the purpose of all good travel writing. *g*
